Snoring Appliances at İncident

Snoring is a condition that can affect many people and can cause serious discomfort not only for the person sleeping but also for those around them.

Snoring occurs when the airflow cannot pass freely through the throat and nasal passages. During sleep, the relaxation of the palate narrows the airway, and the resulting vibration of tissues produces the sound of snoring.

There is no single cause for snoring. Factors such as being overweight, sleeping in the wrong position, alcohol consumption, and smoking before sleep can all contribute to snoring.

Excess weight is one of the main contributors to snoring, as fat deposits can narrow the airway, causing heavier individuals to snore more than slimmer ones. Another significant factor is sleep position. While snoring can occur in any position, lying on the back can relax throat muscles and exacerbate the problem.

Alcohol is another contributor. Consuming alcohol relaxes and softens the throat muscles, increasing the likelihood of snoring during the night. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid alcohol close to bedtime.

Anatomical factors in the oral cavity can also lead to snoring by creating airway obstruction. Additionally, conditions such as hay fever can block the airways, making breathing more difficult during sleep.

A snoring appliance can be used for individuals with mild to moderate sleep apnea. It is not suitable for cases of complete edentulism (full dentures) or when there are acute conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint or oral cavity.

Pre-Treatment Assessments:
Patients with snoring are often referred to a sleep laboratory to determine the degree of airway obstruction and oxygen saturation. Polysomnography, which monitors various physiological parameters during sleep, provides a full diagnosis of sleep-related disorders.

To assess narrowing in the oropharyngeal region, the dentist may request radiographs (lateral and/or postero-anterior head-neck X-rays). During the examination, anatomical structures such as bite relationships, length and laxity of the soft palate, and the size of the tongue are evaluated. When snoring is caused by airway narrowing in the oropharynx, snoring appliances have a high success rate of approximately 85-90%. Patients with normal intraoral findings but other contributing airway issues (like nasal deviations or polyps) are referred to an ENT specialist. Sometimes snoring may have multiple sources, and the appliance may be used first to evaluate how much the issue is reduced before pursuing additional treatments.

Fabrication of the Snoring Appliance:
Measurements of the upper and lower jaws are taken. The lower jaw is then positioned forward according to individual specifications to record the bite. These measurements are sent to the dental laboratory, and the appliance is usually completed within three days.

Possible Challenges During Use:
The most common discomforts include increased saliva production and difficulty swallowing due to the foreign object in the mouth. Additionally, the thickness of the appliance can cause fatigue and soreness in the chewing muscles. These issues generally resolve over time as the patient adapts. If muscle pain persists, the appliance thickness can be slightly reduced.
